Lapis

Lapis was the popular term denoting a certain red earth spice, called ‘Rubrica’ by the Tuscans, which is sawn into thin oblong pieces used, once sharpened, as a writing tool: it comes in several variants, the lead-colour version being known as Lapis Piombino and the black version Lapis nero.
